WHAT WE DO

BACKROUND.

The village of Agomé Kusuntu in Togo, located in a rural region of Sub-Saharan Africa, is confronted with difficult living conditions such as poverty, limited access to social infrastructures, and an almost complete absence of leisure activities. The youth, who constitute a large part of the population, have few opportunities to realize their potential, develop talents, and engage creatively outside of school and home activities. The lack of cultural and artistic structures increases the vulnerability of children and adolescents, who are often left to their own devices and risk falling into idleness and undesirable behaviors. Nevertheless, the youth of Agomé Kusuntu is full of creativity, energy, and expectations that need to be fostered and appreciated.

The idea to establish a cultural center in Kusuntu comes directly from the village chief (mayor). The nearest music school is located in Lomé, about 120 kilometers away. For this reason, our association "Akosiwa e.V." was founded in spring 2024 to build a local music school called "Youth Harmony Music School."

A German music educator and conductor supports the project, among other things, through online consultations. He is an expert in his field and brings experience with educational projects in Africa.

Akosiwa e.V. is a non-profit association dedicated to the establishment and sustainable support of a music school in the village of Agomé Kusuntu in Togo. We operate 100% on a non-profit basis. The core of our work is the renovation and transformation of an existing building into a lively cultural and educational center, which enables musical education as well as intercultural exchange and strengthens the sense of community on site. Through voluntary engagement, local participation, and long-term development, the project promotes cultural sustainability and creates new opportunities for the youth.
